TeenScreen comes to Bainbridge Island - ALERT!!!!
COLUMBIA TEEN SCREEN COMES TO BAINBRIDGE ISLAND

Hello to all,

Just had to pass this along; after more than two years of meetings and presentations, we finally got the final approval we needed from the Bainbridge Island School Board to go head with TeenScreen for our 9th grade health classes. TS will be part of the mental health/suicide prevention curriculum (we use the WA State YSPP, of course!) We had already gotten the approval and support of Kitsap Mental Health and the Kitsap Dept of Health. I want to tell all of you how much our Kelly has help this project to coalesce and move forward. We were just sort of floundering around until she got here and got us better organized. We couldn't have done it with out her and Director Scott Lundquist's support; many, many thanks to you both! We are hoping to expand TS to all of the Kitsap Co. high schools in the future.

The next big project on the horizon is getting YSPP into all our WA state high schools. Sue Eastgard has been working her tail off to get the program into a curriculum model that health teachers can use, and the result has been excellent. Teachers can use the program alone, or expand it into a school-wide campaign, but the critical issue of getting the message of the program to all students is addressed by this new model. I personally believe that this program should be a part of the state-mandated health curriculum, just like AIDS or sex-ed, and have contacted my state senator, Phil Rockefeller, about sponsoring a bill that would make this a reality. If anyone out there is interested in helping in this effort, please let me know. We can all contact our senators and representatives and urge them to support this bill when it becomes a reality (and it will! I'll keep you posted....)

Editor's Note: I inquired what kinds of incentives were being used to insure parents received the permission sheets students must bring home and return, one of the most difficult obstacles to a school being able to test as many students as possible. Kelly Chatwood responded that they are using 'passive consent' in Bainbridge HS, now endorsed by Columbia Teen Screen. If a child does not return a form in which parents refuse permission, it is assumed permission is granted. Prediction: LOTS of teens will be tested at Bainbridge schools and more than ever will helped as a result.
